Introduce:
Chongqing University established the first biomechanics research lab in China in 1979 and the Biomedical Electronics Teaching and Research Section in 1981, which received the country’s first master’s program in “biomechanics.” In 1984, it won the only National Natural Science Award in the field of biomechanics. In 1986, it was approved to establish the first batch of doctoral programs in “biomechanics,” and in 1988, “biomechanics” became the first national key discipline at Chongqing University. The Bioengineering College was founded in 1998, with Biomedical Engineering (BME) becoming a national first-level discipline doctoral program. In 2007, “biomedical engineering” was designated as a national first-level key discipline.
The College offers a comprehensive academic and professional system, including two first-level doctoral programs (Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences [Professional degree]) and two post-doctoral stations (Biomedical Engineering, Biology); three first-level master’s degree programs (Biomedical Engineering [Engineering], Biomedical Engineering [Science], Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences [Professional degree]), and three undergraduate programs (Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Intelligent Medical Engineering). In the fourth round of discipline evaluations, Biomedical Engineering was rated B+, and ranked in the top 10% by the China Alumni Association. The College actively promotes six Chongqing University ESI disciplines, leading two disciplines in the top 1% (Clinical Medicine [59%], Biology and Biochemistry [55%]) and supporting two disciplines in the top 0.1% (Materials Science, Engineering). The Biomedical Engineering program was selected as a national first-class undergraduate program construction site, and the Bioengineering program was selected as a Chongqing characteristic specialty construction site.
With a development philosophy of medical-engineering integration and science-engineering collaboration, the College focuses on the key foundational theories of disease evolution and intervention, the core technologies for medical device and equipment development, and fosters innovative research and talent cultivation. This interdisciplinary research also promotes the development of pharmacy, life sciences, and basic medicine. Leveraging 14 national and provincial-level top-tier platforms, including the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Biorheological Science and Technology, the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Vascular Implants, and the National “111” Program Innovation and Talent Introduction Base, the College has formed three distinctive and advantageous disciplines: Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Engineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, and Medical Diagnostic Technology and Instruments. The research themes cover most frontier areas of the discipline.
The College has 82 full-time faculty members, including six national-level talents/high-impact scholars and over 10 provincial and ministerial-level talents. The mentor team holds significant academic influence, with members serving in roles such as the Biomedical Engineering Discipline Review Group, the undergraduate program teaching steering committee, and as executive directors or directors of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering and other key associations. In the past five years, the College has led 68 national-level projects, including the National Key R&D Program projects/topics, National Natural Science Foundation key/general/young projects. Original scientific achievements include mechanisms regulating the recruitment/transfer of tumor stem cells through mechanical microenvironments, dynamic adaptive and active tissue repair biomaterials for hard/soft tissue injuries, and key technologies for constructing functionalized vascular materials and prostheses. The College has published over 1,100 papers in top journals such as Nature Neuroscience, Science Advances, PNAS, and Advanced Materials. It has obtained 23 invention patents in the health function dynamic recognition field and formulated 17 international standards for interoperable personal health devices. Awards include the first prize for the China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Achievement Award, the first prize for the Chongqing Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize for the China Association for Science and Technology Contribution Award, the first prize for the China Light Industry Federation Science and Technology Award, and the first prize for the China General Chamber of Commerce Science and Technology Award, among others.
